ABOUT THE BACC

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Black Arts & Cultural Center is to develop potential and creativity in Blacks in the Kalamazoo area, advance the awareness of Black artistic ability, preserve Black cultural heritage and enhance interactions among diverse groups in the community.

OUR VISION
The BACC envisions a future where Black artistry thrives at the heart of a vibrant, unified community. In this future, Black artists are celebrated, resourced, and empowered to build lasting careers, fostering a rich cultural legacy. Intentional spaces inspire collaboration, innovation, and financial success, making Kalamazoo a beacon for Black creativity and community.

OUR HISTORY

The Black Arts & Cultural Center (BACC) was founded in December 1986 as the Black Arts & Cultural Committee, inspired by Kalamazoo’s first Black Arts Festival held in August of that year. The founders aimed to provide year-round opportunities for cultural enrichment. BACC flourished with art exhibits, cultural events, classes, plays, dance, poetry, and educational resources. In April 1990, it officially became the Black Arts & Cultural Center.

The Black Arts and Cultural Center (BACC) was founded through the vision and dedication of

Bertha "Barbee" McNeal, Gail Sydnor, Lois Jackson, and James Palmore.

As trailblazers in the arts and culture community, these individuals played a pivotal role in establishing a space that celebrates and uplifts Black artistic expression, heritage, and creativity. Their leadership and commitment laid the foundation for an organization that continues to inspire and empower generations through the arts.
