Portraits of the Cape Verdean people, by Beverly Conley.
When I began my photographic project in 1986, the Boston, Massachusetts neighborhoods of Roxbury and Dorchester had become primary destinations for immigrants from Cape Verde. Approximately 10,000 Cape Verdeans had settled there yet, to the best of my knowledge, there had been little documentation of their community and unique culture. The acceptance of the community for my work allowed
me to capture and preserve everyday moments that otherwise could be forgotten. In 1989 I received a travel grant from the Cape Verdean Consulate in Boston to photograph in Cape Verde.
